Theory and Practice of French Small sword
INSTRUCTOR: Cecil Longino

ROOM: TBA
DESCRIPTION:

While the French small sword shares some similarities with its southern hot-blooded cousin the Italian rapier, it is the very weapon itself which facilitates the rise of French theory and practice. The class will start off by examining the hilt construction along with the blade geometry and length of the small sword compared against the Italian rapier. Next, we will move on to examine the proper grip and precise manipulation of the weapon through several guards and positions. The weapon and its very manipulation are key elements which differentiate small sword technique from that of rapier.

We will continue on to practice specific drills against partners following exact rules laid down for the use of the small sword. These rules are designed to keep the fencer safe in both attacking and defending. If one follows these, they cannot help but fence beautifully, beauty consisting in rule, as mentioned in Monsieur L’Abbat’s anglicized version of his fencing treatise, printed in 1734.

This class will focus on a variety of techniques emphasizing the use of opposition with the weapon and the unarmed hand. Manipulation of time will be another critical aspect of the proper execution of these techniques. A fair amount of time will be spent doting on the use of quart offensively and defensively since it is after all, the most handsome figure in fencing, according to most French masters.

Equipment:

Small sword or French foil

Fencing jacket

Fencing mask

Leather gloves for both hands
