DESCRIPTION:
This class will teach the
basics of the azza (poleaxe) of Fiore dei Liberi, as taught in
the three surviving Fiore manuscripts, with supplementary
material from Fillipo Vadi and the 16th century Bolognese
tradition. Students will learn the parts of the axe, the
proper grip, the guards, and footwork. We will cover basic
techniques such as the cambiamento, strikes, thrusts, and
covers. Equipment: Gloves, Fencing Mask, Wooden dowel 5 to 7 feet long and 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. If desired, a simple axe head can be made using a PVC “Cross” fitting of a diameter that fits the dowel, with short lengths of dowel fixed into the arms, all with screws and duct tape (ugly, but functional). WMA-style axe simulators of leather or rubber are welcome but not required. |
