DESCRIPTION:
Students are strongly encouraged to take the prerequisite classes described below, or to have taken them in years prior at ISMAC, BACA or Paddy Crean. |
| This class will build on many of the principles taught in other classes at ISMAC, including Principles of Unarmed Combat, Cutlass, all Knife classes, the Cabala and the Cube, Biomechanics of Passchen's Wrestling, Slungshot 101, Tomahawk, and more. This is not to say that each of those classes is required to take Boarding Actions. However, understanding the concepts within those classes will give the student a better understanding of the close quarter combat techniques taught in this class. |
From
that foundation, participants will practice advanced techniques
in mixed-weapon scenarios typical of what would be found in a
common maritime boarding action of the 17th through 19th
centuries.
Weapons will include Cutlass, Boarding Axe, Dirk, Unarmed to Armed assault, Pike, Whaling Knife and Dealing with Multiple Opponents. As Slunghot is its own class this year, we will not be having a section in this class devoted to the use of it, but the weapon will be used in some of the other techniques done in the class. Techniques will include grapples, off-hand use, secondary weapon use, blade assists, and multiple opponent defense. This class will be taught by HMCA Instructors Steven Huff, John Lennox, and Gareth Thomas and HMCA Assistant Instructor Chris Mead. |
| HMCA Acknowledged Instructor Tony Wolf will be joining us to teach the slungshot portion of this class. |
Boarding Actions IV will be held Sunday, August 3, from 3:30 - 6:20pm. This is a 3-hour class. This class requires a mask and jacket, as it will culminate in practical application of what you have learned! We will have weapons for student use, however it is suggested to the students that they can bring their own. Weapons you can bring: Singlestick, practice bowie, covered tomahawk, wooden cutlass and wooden boarding axe*. |

The Assault: In the last 10 minutes of class, each student suits up in mask and jacket and chooses the weapon(s) they will use. The class is then split into two groups. One group must defend the ship while the other attempts to “board” and take her. THIS IS NOT CHOREOGRAPHED. It is a chance to apply what the student has learned in a real time scenario. | |
Private Lessons are available with these instructors for more in-depth training in the styles and weapons presented in the class --- *The wooden cutlasses and boarding axes which the HMCA suggests for use are those made by New Sterling Arms.Photos 1 and 2 courtesy of HMCA.
