DESCRIPTION:
As we diligently practice our respective
weapons and systems of interest within the WMA community, it
is very easy to become myopic in our particular weapon of
interest, forgetting that art comes from a rationally creative
state of mind guided by true reason and therefore subjected to
universal first principles, not only specific rules pertaining
to the use of a single weapon.
In this class, we will approach historical
fencing through those universal principles that have governed
all fencing from antiquity through today. Using the longsword,
rapier and smallsword we will actively manipulate the
principles of time, distance, angulation and leverage
according to the rules of science. Special care shall be taken
to examine the nature of a guard as it pertains to defense,
offense, and movement. For every action of offense or defense
stems from the posture one assumes and either facilitates a
specific action or contrariwise hinders it.
The class, time permitting, should progress
from the scientific analysis of the first principles as they
apply to the three weapons on to physical application. Closing
we will explore the nature of the unique art behind each
individual weapon or the how and why each weapon or system
leads to a particular creative choice.
The notion of understanding principles is
not simply an antiquated trifle but is vital to the
application of all martial technique. Steven J. Pearlman
expresses this rather well in The Book of Martial Power,
“Because all techniques function from the same principles, any
ignorance of principle manifests itself in every technique.
Only now, given that I possess a modicum of understanding of
principles, am I starting once again to feel qualified to
concern myself with [technique]. I could liken it to
understanding grammar. If I do not know how to use a period,
it does not matter how many sentences I write. Each will be
problematic, and the lack of proper period placement will only
confuse everything I attempt to say.”
