The following Longsword Tournament Rules and Protocols have been established by the Academy of European Medieval Martial Arts for the conduct of a Longsword Tournament at the 9th annual ISMAC.

Longsword Tournament Rules and Protocols

 
1.      Bouts on  will be fought with Longsword.
Aluminum or Steel blunts may be used. Weapons must be matched.  Acceptable
steel blunts are those from Albion or Arms and Armor.
The default weapon shall be Aluminum.
 
2.      The tournament will be round robin to a set time.  Individual
winners will NOT be announced after each fight.
 
3.      Combatants must hold the rank of scholar, or be
recognized as having the equivalent by a quarum of the judges.
 
4.      The overall winner of the tournament will be
decided by secret ballot cast by the combatants.
Combatants are instructed to vote for who they thought
“most displayed excellence in the art of arms”.
Whoever receives the most votes will be declared first
among equals.  In the event of a tie, the judges shall
declare the winner.
 
5.      Bouts will be fought to a total of three counted
blows, or to three minutes, whichever happens first.
a.      Counted blows will include hits to all parts of the
body except the hands
i.      Incidental blows to the hands will of course happen
and will not be considered a foul
b.      Blows can be cuts, thrusts, or pommel strikes to
the head
c.      Punches and kicks are permitted but will not be
counted as blows
d.      Throwing a combatant to the ground will count as
one blow
e.      If combatants come to grips, they will have 3
seconds to achieve dominance.  After 3 seconds the
fight will be reset.
 
6. The use of excessive force or unnecessary roughness will result in immediate dissmissal from the tournament without appeal.
 
7.       Equipment requirements:
a.      3  weapons fencing mask or better
b.      Gorget
c.      Rigid hand protection
d.      Padded coat / gambeson
e.      Jock
f.      elbow protection is also strongly recommended
 
8.      Combatants are instructed to conduct themselves
with honour, and in the spirit of companionship and
mutual respect for their opponents.
