This class will
cover foundational elements that are crucial to
understanding small-sword fencing and the strategy
of the combat. The first half of the class will
focus on the technical aspects of the guard
positions, the positions of the wrist in offence and
defense and the mechanics of opposition. The
students will then engage in a series of drills
placing these elements into practical application.
The second half of the class will focus on applying
these technical skills to the tactical consideration
in the assault, the duel, street self-defense and
facing other weapons.
Students should
be prepared for a full contact class. Masks,
jackets, groin protectors, gloves for both hands,
chest protectors for women and plastrons, which are
strongly recommended. Students are required to bring
their own practice small-swords, French or Italian
foils are also acceptable, the French foil being the
preferred type. You may also bring capes, daggers
and rapiers.
